Existing PS3 Slim to be phased out
Current Slim PS3 to be replaced by upcoming 'Super Slim' hardware.
Existing PlayStation 3 'Slim' models will be phased out, Sony has confirmed to VideoGamer.com.
Instead, Sony will be "shifting to the new model PS3" announced this morning. If you're after an existing slim, it might be a good idea to pick one up now before stock sells out.
The new 'Super Slim' PS3, which was announced by Sony overnight, features a slimmer design and a new sliding disc cover. Sony claims that the unit is over 50 per cent smaller than the original 60GB PS3 and 20 to 25 percent than current 'Slim' PS3s.
Two versions of the new hardware will be available; one with a 500GB hard drive, and another with a 12GB SSD. The 500GB console will be available to buy from next Friday, September 28.
When enquiring about UK-specific prices for the unit, Sony told VideoGamer.com that it will "no longer set an RRP" for its hardware.
Instead, prices will be "dictated by individual retailers", similar to how Nintendo lets retailers set prices for its hardware.
