Epic's Tim Sweeney: 'Our industry's brightest days are yet to come'
"Within our lifetimes, we will be able to push out enough computational power to simulate reality."
Epic's Tim Sweeney, one of the leading figures in development, has delivered a speech at the D.I.C.E. summit that touched on what lies ahead for the games industry - good things by the sound of it.
In the presentation, titled "Technology and Gaming in the Next 20 Years" Sweeney talked about the limitations of the human eye, stating that we don't need resolutions above 8000x4000 pixels, and that we can't detect changes to frame rate above 72 frames per second.
Interestingly, Sweeney reckons that "within our lifetimes, we will be able to push out enough computational power to simulate reality," but isn't sure whether or not games will run "in your living room or in a server".
"It's not going to change everything but it will make things more convenient for gamers... Our industry's brightest days are yet to come."
Sweeney estimates that hardware will have to offer approximately 2,000 times the computational power of today's leading graphics to achieve this lifelike level of visuals, but that doesn't account for advanced AI routines.
