EA Labels president Frank Gibeau has revealed that next-generation consoles will be released "in about a year's time", and suggested that Battlefield 4 could be coming to next-gen hardware.

Talking to Bloomberg, Gibeau said that he "didn't know" what Microsoft or Sony's next-generation consoles would be called, but that "the new hardware is going to be coming out in about a year's time, so we're right around this period in time when the market's going to slow down and then you have a new game changer coming with all new technology, all new hardware, and another growth period.

"We have to invest in new technologies of course to try and really take advantage of the power of these new machines," he continued. "So we're doing that and we've communicated that in our earnings releases. It's a big investment for us this year."

Gibeau revealed that part of that investment is going into "three to five new IPs" that will launch on next-gen consoles within the first 24 months of being on sale.

"We have an engine called Frostbite that is a proven engine," he continued. "That's tailor-made for next-gen hardware. So we're in really good shape from a technology standpoint, which is where we had our misstep last time.

"And we have a much richer and broader set of IPs this time than we did on the last generation. EA Sports is there with all of its power, but you also see some really big brands like Battlefield coming online, and we've already started three to five new intellectual properties that we're going to launch in that first 24 months of the new gen."

Neither Microsoft or Sony have yet announced plans for their next-generation consoles.

Microsoft, however, has frequently referenced its next-gen Xbox inadvertently during interviews and in job ads for the company.
