According to the blog of video game writer Raymond Padilla (formerly G4TV and GameSpy), Nintendo's follow-up to the Nintendo DS will be released towards the end of the year and will offer visuals comparable to the GameCube and Wii.

Padilla spent much of GDC chatting to developers in the hope of unearthing new info on the heavily rumoured handheld. Here's what he found out.

- Two screens like the DS, but larger and higher resolution. The gap between the two screens has also been reduced and is now described as negligible, allowing developers to treat the two screens as one larger screen if they wish.

- Will feature an accelerometer

- Power to be similar to the GameCube, with developers who have worked on the GameCube or Wii to find the transition to the new handheld a straightforward one.

- Developers hoping to have first games finished before the end of 2010, suggesting a late 2010 release for the handheld. This would also point to a E3 2010 reveal.

i dont remember gamecube having games looking better than ps2.
It did. Rogue Leader, Resi Evil remake are just two examples of games that still look great even today!

Cross platform games like Timesplitters 2 and the second Splinter Cell for example, were cut down visually on the PS2.

As long as the games stay fun and the power doesnt die out quick this could be a winner. I think thats why we are getting gamecube graphics now on a portable - because if it was done before the thing would quite literally melt in your hand but now that die shrinkage has caught up I think this is viable.

(want)Dual analogue, dual screen, already has decent developer support with easy transitional skills. trusted brand that (dont want)hasnt tried to shaft its customer by telling them that download only games at twice the price are for their benefit, any mention of a locked in multimedia format or memory card? No? Still interested then

I'm not sure what I think about this announcement.
To me, the DS isn't about 'quality visuals' at all.
It's about great art styles and fantastic pick up and play gameplay.
I'm not too bothered I suppose.

The Gamecube had more power than the PS2, Nintendo choosing to make their next console to PS2 standards would be a step back.

why gamecube power?
psp is almost doing ps2 power and that was released all the way back in 2005.
when psp2 comes out with a dual analogue stick and graphics power better than ps2, it will kill nintendo.
assuming their not attacked by pirates again and the price difference is not massive.

why does this comment say "in response to VG_staff's post" ??? its not supposed to be.

This is sort of misleading. They say the specifications will be on par with Gamecube, but the tech will be so much more streamlined and easier to use that the visuals will be better than Gamecube's. It's as much to do with how you use the power as it is the power itself.

And no, I don't care whether the graphics are mind blowingly good or not.

I'm gonna be well annoyed if this is released this year and plays DS games >_>

Wow they are getting the best out of the Gamecube 1st the Wii and then the New Portable. To refer to a separate thread and Nintendo's criticism of innovation in competitive consoles then the visuals comparative to Gamecube on a portable was done back in 2004 so pot kettle.
