Microsoft will announce its next-generation Xbox on May 21, it's been confirmed.

Invites detailing the reveal event were issued to media earlier this evening, and were quickly followed by online chatter from Microsoft spokespeople.

"A New Generation Revealed", read an alleged image of the invite, with Microsoft's Major Nelson later tweeting "Here we go! #XboxReveal".

The event will take place in Washington at 6pm BST on May 21, and will be streamed live over Xbox.com and Spike TV.

"On Tuesday May 21st, we'll mark the beginning of a new generation of games, TV and entertainment," wrote Major Nelson.

"On that day, we’ll be holding a special press event on the Xbox campus and we invite you to join us via the live global stream that will be available on Xbox.com, Xbox LIVE and broadcast on Spike TV if you are in the US or Canada.

"On that day, we'll share our vision for Xbox, and give you a real taste of the future. Then, 19-days later at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, we'll continue the conversation and showcase our full lineup of blockbuster games.

"We are thrilled to pull back the curtain and reveal what we've been working on."

A May 21 reveal has long been rumoured for Microsoft's next-gen Xbox, which is expected to go on sale later this year.

Looking forward to it. I'm loving my Xbox atm but I do have a mates Sky account on it so I get to watch everything I don't have. So yeah the entertainment side of it I'm interested in, but first and foremost are the games.

I'll be at work when this gets revealed, well info, I don't expect the actual console itself to be shown like Sony did for the PS4. Leave some surprises for E3 eh? ;)

I hope the site covers it intensively! Be equivalent for the journey back home until I watch the broadcast via the Xbox or via youtube.

All I know is that when I sign in to my Xbox, as often as i see people playing games people are viewing some form of media. Some of them I see on Netflix and Lovefilm more than I see them playing games.

Thankfully it doesn't affect my enjoyment of games at all. Microsoft still has a lot to prove to top Sony's current offering though. Not least of which is free online gaming. Charge me for the media services, offset it some other way for all I care, 10% discount off purchases for paying subscribers. Whatever. I don't care how they do it, I am done paying to play games online. If this means I have to accept a slower, less stable connection without matchmaking; Then thats just what I'll have to accept.

That or not buy a console and stick to PCs ;)

You and I both know the answer to that ;)

In fairness, I am always interested in every console release. But "new" instead of "next" generation currently sits a little uncomfortably with me. I was seriously doubting my purchase of another Playstation had they come out shouting "multimedia device" at me :/

"A new generation of games, TV and entertainment"

I'm out.

I could expand on that, but don't think I need to.
