Believes it will be 'earlier rather than later'.

id Software co-founder John Carmack believes the next hardware cycle will begin “earlier rather than later” and that it will be Sony who gets to the market first.

“The whole jockeying for who's going to release the first next-gen console is very interesting and pretty divorced from the technical side of things,” Carmack told CD-Action.

“Whether Sony wants to jump the gun to prevent the same sort of 360 lag from happening to them again seems likely.

“As developers, we would really like to see this generation stretch as long as possible. We'd like to see it be quite a few more years before the next-gen consoles comes out, but I suspect one will end up shipping something earlier rather than later.”

Carmack also chipped in on the debate over digital distribution, revealing that he believes one of the consoles in the next generation will ship without the capacity for optical media.

“I think there's a decent chance that one of the next-gen consoles will be without optical media,” said Carmack. “The uptake rates of people who have broadband connects surprised everyone this generation. It's higher than what the core publishers and even the first party people expected.”

I also think that Nintendo will release a HD version because Sony say and i am sure many others do that consumers make a leap either the PS2 or the PS3 after Wii if they are interested in the more powerful machines so to conter this they could just bring out a more powerful and HD version. would only make sense.

I agree with Karlius and Mr N. I think we are a fair way from seeing the best of what the PS3 and 360 are capable of, particularly if you factor in Natal and the 'wand'. Carmack's comments contradict the statements made by MS and Sony during E3 where they both intimated that the current gen had a lot of life left in it. This is particularly so of the PS3 with its higher capacity Blu-Ray discs. eg I think more and more 360 games will be launched on multiple discs.

The Wii on the other hand has already peaked graphically and a HD version is an obvious progression to counteract the release of Natal and Wand. I do agree with Carmack that games on demand via download is very likely, so perhaps WiiHD will be without a DVD drive?

It is too early for Sony to do something like this. Nintendo is in the best position to come out with a new one sooner.
The only "console" that is set to come out is Onlive which, from what I heard, still has not done their beta.
Unless Sony rethinks their pricing strategy, during our current economic times, they better not come up with another $599.99 US dollar package!

no i defintely think Nintendo with rumours of Wii HD Yes the PS3 will have a 10 year life span but when did it come out? 3 years ago and the PS2 has just gone into its 10 year life span. I think that the fact that the PS3 will have a 10 year life span wont rule out a new console before it hits the 10 year mark or even the 9 year mark like the PS2.

?! ... the ps3 just barely came out on the late 06 holiday. WE'RE still in 09!!! I think with all the bad sales and economic slump sony went through, their probably going to be the last company to take out a system. Nintendo has the best chance of bringing it out first, then microsoft and finally sony.

i think sony get a harder time than they deserve, they have sold more ps3s since launch than 360 has sold since the ps3 has launched
