Blu-ray accessory coming to Xbox 360?

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer seems to think so.

Speaking to technology website Gizmodo, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has revealed that there's no need to put a Blu-ray drive into an Xbox 360 because you'll be able to get one as an accessory.

Asked specifically about a Blu-ray Xbox 360, Ballmer replied: "Well I don't know if we need to put Blu-ray in there - you'll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories."

Gizmodo then went to Xbox PR for clarification: "Our immediate solution for Blu-ray-quality video on an Xbox 360 is coming this fall with Zune Video and 1080p instant-on HD streaming. As far as our future plans are concerned, we're not ready to comment."

With standalone Blu-ray players now available for around £100, what would you consider paying for a Blu-ray Xbox 360 accessory?

It has come from the horses mouth, so it is coming. With sales of Blu Ray discs picking up, Microsoft want a piece of the action.

But yeah, it is pointless. A standalone player would be the way to go for 360 owners.

Most unlikely to be honest, it'd mean MS validating a Sony decision by following suit. They've got their HD digital distribution service coming up and this would scupper that. Also it would make the 360 more expensive than the PS3 to play Blu Rays.

True, the 360 really isn't known to be very dependable. Less time on means less burning of the candles wick so to say.

No, no point. Just buy a standalone Blu-ray player. It will save wear on turning the 360 on for something it doesn't need to be on for.
