DFC Intelligence analyst David Cole estimates that games for the iPhone and iPod touch will account for 24 per cent of the portable gaming market by 2014, with much of the growth in the market coming from Apple.

"The dedicated portable game systems from companies like Nintendo and Sony are still expected to lead the market, but it appears growth for these devices has peaked," commented Cole.

"The platforms from Apple are expected to be responsible for the bulk of market growth over the next few years."

The portable gaming market is estimated to account for $11.7 billion in sales come 2014.

DS has been around since 2004!
PSP since 2005 in this country!

There have been cosmetic and functionality changes I mean the DS is now DSi and has a camera. They have been around for a long time in gaming years and the Touch/Iphone are fresh and they are doing simple playable games that are different. While the PSP and DS are by no means stagnant the IPod/Phone may take a few sales away. Nowhere in the region that the analyst is suggesting.

So like the touch screen, stylus WiFi online gaming etc. apart from that the DS is just like the Gameboy Colour.

and the PSP go is like the PSP 1k? I mean they both take UMDS right?

Yeah and given the DS and PSP series haven't changed in all the years they've been released it's not exactly rocket science to determine that the potential for creativity and imagination is waning on the gameplay front. Though titles like scribblenauts are still pushing the boundry, the thing that's really giving the iPhone the edge is community content and connected services.

Doesn't take an analyst to see that a small market + more people buying ipod touch/iphone + free apps and cheap prices = growth in that market.
