As of June 2nd 2005 Sony Computer Entertainment has shipped a massive 90 million PlayStation 2 systems to retail around the world. The numbers for each territory are 36,480,000 units to America, 32,480,000 to Europe and 21,040,000 to Asia and Japan.
The PlayStation 2 launched in Japan just over 5 years ago on March 4, 2000. According to Sony the original PlayStation took two years and three months longer to reach the same figure.
Sales are still going strong with shipments for the 2004 fiscal year being 16,170,000 units. This figure includes the new slim model which has boosted sales of the aging console.
Sony also claims that software sales are on the rise with 252 million units shipped in the 2004 fiscal year. This is the highest ever figure for the console, which has now seen 800 million software units shipped to retail since its launch.
