Nintendo has announced plans to discontinue the Basic 8GB Wii U console in Japan.

The SKU will be replaced by a new 32GB white Wii U due to arrive next month, joining the black 32GB model that’s been available since launch.

The 8GB console will still be available in other parts of the world, however, a Nintendo UK representative suggests, telling VideoGamer.com that the announcement is “only applicable for the Japanese market”.

Last year, it was reported that the trade price of the 8GB console had been cut by around £70 in the UK, prompting rumours that Nintendo was attempting to “clear out” stock of the entry-level console.

Nintendo is due to reveal the first details on its next system, the Nintendo NX, next year.
