3D gaming first on the agenda.

ps3slimtop -

Sony Computer Entertainment has revealed the promised 3D capabilities for the PS3 will be introduced later this year via two firmware updates: one of gaming and one for movies.

SCE president Kaz Hirai announced at CES earlier today that the 3D functionality will arrive first for gaming, with the movie update to follow at a later date. Further details regarding experiencing 3D with a PS3 will be announced later in the year.

According to IGN, Sony demoed the 3D technology at CES using 3D versions of Gran Turismo 5, Avatar and 3D Super Stardust HD. Demo stations used Sony Bravia Televisions and required the use of shuttered glasses.

Will this be a mandatory update or can I choose to skip it and still play online?

I read an article of the next 20 years of technology and it sounded like the 3d style holographic stuff they used to make the gorillaz perform with isn't a million miles away from being possible in a confined space, so no doubt as soon as everyone gets 3d tvs this will be the next thing

Does that not mean you have to wait for the Human Eye to Evolve to see in 3D of a Digital projection that is projected in 2d... Have fun waiting

I'm not buying a 3D TV until I don't have to wear those stupid glasses.

The DLP 3D sets from JVC are actually quite affordable. You can get a 60" for the same price as your average DLP.

But then I guess it was the same argument with HD and the few who had HD TV when the 360 and Blu-ray players first came out.

The main issue I see is that there are different formats vying for attention again and another bewildering choice for customers until only one format is finally supported.

Apparently Shutter technology is the only one that can cope with showing a 1080p picture properly in 3D with LCD. Panasonic and Philips have gone for Plasma rather than LCD and use a similar system to the cinema.

Seriously I thought it was the sh*tty old Shutter Glasses you get. Seems mad to do such an update for the limited few that can use it. I suppose it's Sony pushing a Sony product which is good to see. What with the amount of problems they have cross merchandise. Ie the PSP - Phone.

I was a BVE in london around this time last year and there a couple of stands showing demos of shuttered glasses, it was only film clips and it was very hard to get directly in front of the screen which gives you the best view but i was suitably impressed... it wasn't balls out like avatar in the cinema but if it was affordable it could be pretty good
