Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. has announced that the 2009 holiday season retail sales of its PlayStation 3 console during the five weeks following the last week of November exceeded 3.8 million units worldwide. This represents a 76 per cent increase in hardware sales compared to the same period in 2008.

SCEI also announced that there are now more than 38 million registered PlayStation Network accounts worldwide.

Looking ahead to a year of accelerated growth, Sony points to software line-up which includes God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, MAG, Heavy Rain and ModNation Racers. The platform holder also confirmed its intention to tap into a wider audience through the introduction of the Motion Controller and the delivery of a 3D experience in homes with 3D stereoscopic games and movies on the PS3 - future firmware updates will make this possible.

Nice to see some positives for Sony. This year is going to be cracking for all 3 platforms. Super Mario Galaxy 2, Zelda possibly. God Of War III, Heavy Rain for the Station and Alan Wake (hopefully), Splinter Cell and ME2.

Going to be good!

Not very suprising in my opinion after all the great exclusives the PS3 had last year.

Nice. Good to see the userbase is growing. Always better to have more potential customers to encourage developers.

Seems it was a bumper Christmas for Sony and Microsoft as well, despite the recession.
