The Buzz: Movies and TV could soon be available on demand to PS3 users.

The LA Times reports that Sony is preparing to launch an online video service for the PlayStation 3 to rival the Video Marketplace on Xbox 360 as early as this summer.

According to studio executives the platform holder has been in licensing talks with studios in recent weeks in order to secure content for the imminent service. The LA Times says the video service will launch offering both movies and TV shows.

It's a move backed by Parks Associates analyst Kurt Scherf. "That's where the future is. They've got to establish a toehold in that space," said Scherf.

Sony has been unwilling to comment, although PlayStation marketing chief Peter Dille has stated on Inside PlayStation Network blog that the service is most definitely coming.

"While I don't have any new announcements... it's already been confirmed that we'll be offering a video service for PS3 in a way that separates the service from others you've seen or used," explained Dille.
