Rumours of Sony's plans to cull the 80GB PlayStation 3 in favour of a larger capacity model have gained further credence following a Gamestop conference call which reportedly confirmed the 80GB model is no more.

Sources from several GameStop locations have contacted IGN revealing the new model PlayStation 3 will feature a hard drive of 120GB or larger - similar to that of the Xbox 360 Elite - plus will be packed in with the new Dual Shock 3 controller.

Sony is currently unable to confirm the reports, telling IGN that is doesn't "comment on rumours or speculation".

Whats so confusing about a new sku? If you get confused by a new sku, you'd probably get confused by a ball of yarn rolling across the carpet. What are you people, a bunch of kittens? LOL!
A new sku is simply a choice of options. Do you get confused whn you go into a restaurant and the menu gives you some nice choices? Chicken or steak, peas or carrots?
The various options are nice.
The 20 gig one was not popular, so Sony killed it.
No problem.
Everyone bitched about the initial price of the PS3, so Sony gave everyone the option of a scaled down 40 gig one, with no BC and only two usbs. Its proven popular. And its much cheaper for the ones who think the PS3 was too expensive.
Now Sony is supposedly replacing the 80 gig premium one, with a more appropriate, 120 or 160 gig one (if the rumors are true...) So the deluxe model just got more deluxe.
If this rumor is true, we now have 2 options if you are thinking of buying...
A 40 gig entry level model, cheap for those who can't pony up the money for first class, and a deluxe model, for those who have a real job and can.
Still confused?
LOL!
One comment I'd like to make about the initial uproar over the PS3 being pricey. I still cannot believe that that was an issue.
This is a market where people pay 4 or 500 for an iphone, or ipod. If you van pony up that kind of money for a phone or an mp3 player, I mean, come on! This thing is a first rate gaming machine, a blu-ray player of the highest order, and a media center where you can store and play music,(hell, I've got my entire music collection on my upgraded 160 gig drive) videos, and display pictures. You can surf the web on it, you can install Linux and turn it into a PC, you can participate in the Folding At Home program and help the medical world do research.
The only thing this thing doesn't do is hold your hand and make out with you. You'll need a girlfriend for that.
And as for the skus? Come on people. There are a lot more confusing things out there in the world, like who to elect for President. This crook, or that one. But if you're confused by a choice in PS3's, you need to be riding the short bus to school!

This will just be a larger hdd and dualshock other then that i expect be exactly the same as the 80 gig its replacing.

Personally i don't see where all the fuss is really when you can replace the ps3 hdd yourself if you wish anyway. But I think having a larger hdd will be must anyway with downloading content that will build up on your system.

There are too many SKUs flying around as it is, it's a defining feature of this console generation and about as annoying as furniture getting repositioned every few months - just when you got used to the last layout you have to work out all over again where you can put your feet up.

I hope next generation they get it right first time and someone nails the furniture to the floor to make them stick with it.

Wonder if this rumoured PS3 SKU will be backwards compatible again?
