It's been rumoured for some time, but Konami has now officially announced Silent Hill V (working title) for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game follows Alex Shepherd, a war veteran who takes compassionate leave following the disappearance of his younger brother Joshua. Investigations lead Alex to the small town of Shepherd's Glen, but before too long he finds himself in the infamous streets of Silent Hill.

On next-gen systems Silent Hill V features a highly detailed world and more control over the game's central character. To tackle the freakish creatures of Silent Hill Alex has access to a number of offensive and defensive moves, and the series' trademark puzzles now rely on players using cues from the environment. The soundtrack is being worked on by famed composer Akira Yamaoka, giving the game the expected unsettling feel.

"Silent Hill V is an international, cross-cultural production, with leading development talent from around the globe collaborating to raise the bar even higher for this incredible series," said Brian Christian, Vice President of Product Development at Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. "With gritty graphics and sound combining to create a haunting atmosphere and all-new visceral gameplay elements, Silent Hill V shows the level to which next-generation hardware can enhance the player's overall gaming experience."

No release date has been announced at this time, but expect to hear much more on the game in the coming months.
