A freemium Simpsons game is in the works for iOS and Android. As reported by CNET, The Simpsons: Tapped Out sees Homer destroying Springfield with a nuclear explosion. He then sets out to rebuild the city with a design of his own.

While the game visually resembles a Sim(psons) City, it seems that this urban renewal requires you to complete quests for various members of the show's cast, who will apparently be voiced by their respective actors. The script will also be handled by the show's writers.

This being a freemium title, there's a currency – Donuts – that can be used to speed up your progress. You can find Donuts littered around the City, but EA hopes you'll pay to get them immediately - developing a crippling addiction that sends your entire life spiralling down the toilet.

"We want this to be one of the biggest titles this year," said EA exec Bernard Kim. "We've invested a lot. It's absolutely a top-tier development priority for us."

There's no official release date yet, but CNET seems to think the iOS version will arrive in the next few weeks, with the Android version following a few months later.

VideoGamer.com Analysis

I keep a list of the things I once loved, but which are now utterly dead to me. Star Wars sits right at the top, but The Simpsons aren't too far below.

This is a bit of a shame, isn't it? I love the idea of building your own Simpsons world ala The Sims as a console or PC game with a one-off purchase fee (you know, normal games) but as soon as I saw the word 'freemium' I wasn't interested. Bloody terrible.

They want it to be one of the biggest titles this year so up there with mass effect n halo 4 etc I think he needs to sit down n give his head a shake, n why have these freemium games not died out yet surely ppl dont actually spend £10 on 100 in game currencies do they the only time I ever bought something in a freemium game was habbo hotel wen I was a kid using my dads credit card he obviously wasn't happen but would never spend my money on in game currency. I stopped playin FarmVille cos I couldn't get any further without spending real money. Y don't they just make a simpsons game in sim city style without the donuts n let us buy the game for a reasonable price in first place.
