App Store users have now made over 40 billion app downloads, with almost half this monstrous total coming in 2012 alone, Apple has announced.

The App Store currently boasts over 500 million active accounts and set a new record in December, recording over two billion downloads.

Over 775,000 apps for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch populate the App Store, earning developers over seven billion dollars.

"It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community," said Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. "Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world."

One big hit has been Imangi Studios' Temple Run which clocked more than 75 million downloads in 2012.

"The success of our game Temple Run in 2012 was nothing short of astonishing," said Keith Shepherd, co-founder of Imangi Studios. "We were simply looking to create a game that was fun and easy to play, but once it hit the App Store, the game took off. This past year, we saw more than 75 million downloads of Temple Run on iOS."

Temple Run came pre-installed with my HTC Desire C, and is solely responsible for my sudden attraction to the Android platform, which then became the reason my XBox 360 hasn't been turned on for about a fortnight. I've had Resi 6 and Risen 2 here waiting to be played for the last week, but currently there's so many games to explore on Android it's like having a new console. That's just the free stuff, haven't even started looking at the £0.69p and upwards stuff.

I can't speak for iOS as I don't own i-anything, but I love the way Google manages to integrate everything together in its environment e.g. Google's Android on the phone, comes with Google Play Store app, download games for your phone, play them in Google Chrome browser on the PC etc. Not sure how that compares to Apple but it seems pretty neat to me.
