Kinect Sports: Rivals

Platform: Xbox One
Developer: Rare
Release: Q1 2014

Kinect Sports Rivals screenshot

It's another game from Microsoft for the Xbox One that seems to be taking forever to come out. Hooray! It should be released sooner rather than later, too, because if there's any title on the horizon that proves Kinect 2.0 is a huge step up it's this. Although it still follows the Kinect Sports formula, Rivals works a country mile better than the last two efforts and Kinect is directly responsible for that. Why? Because it actually works. Don't dismiss this too quickly – it may just be a big moment where the motion-control device is concerned.

Dragon Age: Inquisition

Platform: Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, PC
Developer: BioWare
Release: 2014

Dragon Age: Inquisition screenshot

BioWare has got to hit it out the park with the third Dragon Age game. With Origins remaining as one of the finest RPGs in recent memory, the sequel was a touch disappointing. Never really delivering on its core concept, it never lived up to the original… hence why Inquisition has to. Thankfully, so far, so good. The sheer scale BioWare is aiming for is insane, and if Dragon Age's awesome story can be woven into a huge open world, then this is game of the year nominee material.

Mad Max

Platform: Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, PC
Developer: Avalanche Studios
Release: 2014

Mad Max screenshot

There's no doubt Avalanche knows what it's doing when it comes to the basics of an open world. Most of the ones it has created are both a wonder to look at and gargantuan in size. Unfortunately, the developer doesn't really seem to know what to do within that space. Often overly sparse, they cry out for a touch more direction. No one has seen enough of Mad Max to know if Avalanche has rectified this, but, ironically, the 'Wasteland' does look awfully dead.

Battlefield 5

Platform: Xbox One, PS4, PC
Developer DICE
Release: 2014

battlefield 4111111111111111 -

Will Battlefield 5 come out in 2014? Does EA want to bring the fight to Call of Duty every year? That definitely was the original plan, hence why Medal of Honor was given a hard push before everyone realised it sucked. With that being killed, though, EA either has to push something new in its place or bring Battlefield back as a yearly franchise. We can't see DICE being particularly keen on that, but there's no way COD will ever be given room to breathe.

Final Fantasy XIV/Lightning Returns

Platform: PS4/Xbox 360, PS3
Developer: Square Enix
Release: 2014

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII screenshot

Who cares about Final Fantasy anymore? Well, Chris Bratt, for one. But honestly Square, talk about convoluting and running your series into your ground. 2014 sees the MMO, Final Fantasy XIV, come to PS4 and yet another Final Fantasy XIII game, Lightning Returns, make its way to the 360 and PS3. No one has any idea what the story is about anymore, nor what the hell is going on, but hey, they're coming, so get ready…

Yoshi's New Island

Platform: 3DS
Developer: Arzest
Release: 2014

yoshi11 -

One member of the team VideoGamer played this at E3. Said person is a huge Nintendo fan but still walked away from Yoshi's New Island as if something wasn't quite right. The Japanese giant is obviously busy working away at it – it's barely even mentioned its name in the last few months – but given it's a sequel to Super Mario World 2 we can't believe this will be released in any state that isn't worthy of the name. And yet, current playthroughs say otherwise, meaning Nintendo has quite the hill to climb. And that hill will probably be covered in Baby Marios. Because why not.

The Witcher 3

Platform: Xbox One, PS4, PC
Developer: CD Projekt Red
Release: 2014

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt screenshot

The Witcher 3 had a very good year. Simultaneously highlighting its visual sheen, stupidly big open world, and intricate gameplay, it made every RPG fan in the world take notice. 2014, then, is go time for the Polish developer. To seize on the hype and show there's some serious depth to The Witcher 3 – which there surely will be – CD Projekt Red needs to hurry up and get a hands-on build ready.

The Crew

Platform: Xbox One, PS4, PC
Developer: Ivory Tower
Release: Q3 2014

The Crew screenshot

Does The Crew suck? Seemingly. Ubisoft's ambitions are certainly grand, and an open, persistent world dedicated to driving around with your friends sounds wonderful. In the state it was last shown to the public, however, it was anything but. That's why it was delayed, though – to get it to the levels the French developer needed it to. With that in mind, we should all pat Ubisoft on the back. It made the hard decision. Let's hope it pays off.

Batman: Next-Gen

Platform: Xbox One, PS4, PC
Developer: Rocksteady
Release: Q4 2014

batman next1 -

Before you say anything, yes, a next-gen Batman game has not been announced. But, given Warner Bros.' dedication to the franchise – Origins was released, we would assume, to follow the yearly COD/Assassin's Creed models – we wouldn't bet against a new Batman title coming in 2014 from Rocksteady. Word on the street, too, is that Bats will find himself in a GTA-like open world, complete with Batmobile to get him around the place. If true, other video games should give up now. Nothing will top that.

The Order: 1886

Platform: PS4
Developer: Ready At Dawn
Release: 2014

The Order: 1886 screenshot

"The Order: 1886 is set in an alternate history where an old order of knights keep all of the world safe from half-bred monsters, who are a combination of animal and man." Wait a minute. That sounds like a Wikipedia entry. That's because it is! Sony has gone so quiet about The Order and how exactly it'll all play out that you may as well say pigs with guns will feature. It's one thing showing off a game at a conference to get some hype, but at least give us a little something to go on after that.

Dark Souls 2 and The Witcher 3 are the big ones for me. Titanfall looks like good fun though, perhaps it will get me back into shooters like COD 4 did.

I might be mistaken but I thought they already said the Battlefield games weren't going to have annual releases.

This list makes me feel kind of bad for wanting a WiiU. There are like three things coming for it in the future that aren't Mario.

/sigh.

EA MMA was better than THQ's UFC Undisputed? I don't think so guys, EA MMA was garbage!

Good article though, makes me glad I got a PS4 early... looks like I'll be spending rather a lot on games this year...

I reckon the article contained something grossly defamatory about Randy Pitchford and they had to pull it.
