Mario Kart 8

Platform: Wii U
Developer: Nintendo
Release: May

Mario Kart 8 screenshot

Will Mario Kart 8 save the Wii U? No. Probably not. But that doesn't mean it won't be good. Every opportunity we've had to play the karting sequel has shown it's rather wonderful, and far better than the Wii game that preceded it. As ever, Nintendo has introduced the most minimal of changes – gravity is no longer that big of an issue – but it's the focus on moreish, pitch-perfect gameplay where it stands out. This may become another Wii U casualty, but it should also be very, very good.

Super Smash Bros.

Platform: Wii U/3DS
Developer: Nintendo
Release: 2014

Super Smash Bros. screenshot

Smash Bros. is bound to get everyone in a flutter when it rolls around in 2014, ticking all the boxes it usually does. While it'll no doubt be awesome – it usually is – it does seem to be a case of more of the same. It will certainly be a welcome addition to the Wii U library but, again, will it sell to people who haven't been that invested before? Arguably not.

Quantum Break

Platform: Xbox One
Developer: Remedy Entertainment
Release: 2014

Quantum Break screenshot

For the individual who wants more TV in their video games, Remedy brings you Quantum Break! Joking aside, the idea is certainly ambitious and Remedy has proven in the past – with games such as Alan Wake – that it has a knack for the unusual. We just need more information to go on at this point, rather than the constant teases we seem to be getting at the moment.

Uncharted 4

Platform: PS4
Developer: Naughty Dog
Release: 2014

uc4 -

Naughty Dog revealed a logo for Uncharted 4 and Sony still didn't acknowledge its existence when asked. That's just baffling. What isn't baffling is what form the fourth game in the series will take: we'd bet all the money we had – that's £1,859 – that Nathan Drake will return, and that there will be plenty of wise-cracking jibes throughout. More importantly, everyone needs to make sure it doesn't suck like Uncharted 3. Enough time has passed where we think we can safely say that it was a disappointment.

Destiny

Platform: Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3
Developer: Bungie
Release: 9 September

Destiny screenshot

We have a long wait before Destiny finally hits shelves, and yet so much has already been said about Bungie's MMO-like epic that we're arriving at that point where we just want to actually play it. Certainly ambitious, the developer's big push is for events that aren't always controlled by the player or scripted by the game. It'll be interesting to see if Halo-fans take to the new environment as well, especially as it's fair to assume that Halo 5 will be launching at a similar time.

Dying Light

Platform: Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, PC
Developer: Techland
Release: 2014

Dying Light screenshot

It's easy to dismiss Dying Light as nothing more than Dead Island 3, and in many ways that is very much the case. After playing it earlier this year, however, there is a little more to Techland's next zombie romp than originally meets the eye. Fast, 'fluid', and oddly entertaining, it has more structure than Dead Island's somewhat misguided setup. If it continues to head in this direction, it could be far better than many are expecting. Of course it could be utter shite too, so be warned.

The Elder Scrolls Online

Platform: Xbox One, PS4, Mac, PC
Developer: Zenimax Online
Release: 4 April

elderscrolls -

The biggest problem facing TESO is that it's an MMO. Various members of VideoGamer.com have played Bethesda's upcoming Elder Scrolls epic and each has come away feeling rather bemused. This isn't down to the fact it's bad, just that you can't get a feel or understanding for a game that big in the space of an hour or so. If such hurdles can be overcome, TESO could become the first proper massively-multiplayer online game to conquer the console, and that's no small feat.

The Evil Within

Platform: Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, PC
Developer: Tango Studios
Release: Q4 2014

The Evil Within screenshot

Shinji Mikami's next game is horrific. Admittedly the person writing this is a master of suspending his disbelief – and therefore a giant wuss – but seeing The Evil Within in motion does hark back to the days when Silent Hill, Resident Evil and Forbidden Siren were actually scaring people. That's the key here, too – this does have the feel of a 'classic' horror game to it. Whether that works in today's world is a question for 2014 to answer, but if anyone can make lightning strike twice, it's Mikami.

Wolfenstein: The New Order

Platform: Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, PC
Developer: MachineGames
Release: Q2 2014

Wolfenstein: The New Order screenshot

You've got to commend MachineGames. In a world where multiplayer reigns supreme, especially where the FPS is concerned, the ex-Starbreeze team has decided that a dedicated single-player is the way to go. Admittedly it has both the brand and a solid experience behind it, but that name also puts a lot of pressure on the developer to deliver. The New Order, currently, looks very by-the-numbers. If there's nothing else to season such a standard experience, we may all forget about this very quickly.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain/Ground Zeroes

Platform: Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3
Developer: Kojima Studios
Release: TBC 2014/21 March 2014

Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes screenshot

Oh, Kojima. You so crazy! One new Metal Gear game isn't enough, so you've made a prologue that's going to come out months before the actual sequel. How this makes any sense we don't know, but if you've been waiting for extra Kojima-content, 2014 has you covered in multiple senses. All nonsense aside, The Phantom Pain has every chance of being astonishingly good. With influences all over the shop, this may be the fresh and new experience we've all been hoping for.

Dark Souls 2 and The Witcher 3 are the big ones for me. Titanfall looks like good fun though, perhaps it will get me back into shooters like COD 4 did.

This list makes me feel kind of bad for wanting a WiiU. There are like three things coming for it in the future that aren't Mario.

/sigh.

EA MMA was better than THQ's UFC Undisputed? I don't think so guys, EA MMA was garbage!

Good article though, makes me glad I got a PS4 early... looks like I'll be spending rather a lot on games this year...

I reckon the article contained something grossly defamatory about Randy Pitchford and they had to pull it.
