Power, controls, connectivity, screen technology and more.

It's usually not long after we've got a new console that talk of the next one begins. The PSP has been available for four years, so chatter has understandably moved towards what Sony could be cooking up for the inevitable PSP 2. We've already seen some stories claiming to have information on the unconfirmed handheld's graphics processor, but so far there's little that could be called concrete. So, before Sony announces anything and ruins our fun, we've put together a lengthy list of features we want included in the PSP 2, covering everything from sheer power to how you're going to be playing the games. If you're reading this Sony, make your next handheld using this template and you'll be on to a winner.

Two analogue sticks and better shoulder buttons
If we had to pick one one thing to change with the PSP's design, it would be the analogue nub, and more importantly the fact that it's only got one. Two sticks has become the norm and by having one a whole range of games simply aren't as playable on PSP as they could be. So, two sticks on the PSP 2 is absolutely essential. We also want them to feel more like the sticks we use on the PS3 controllers and not the strange sliding nub we currently have on the PSP. While we're on the subject of controls, we're not big fans of the PSP's shoulder buttons, so proper L and R buttons would be great - if there's room for L2 and R2 as well, even better.

Lots of games
This might seem like a rather obvious thing to say, but considering the lack of triple-A PSP games that have been released over the past few years, it's not a given. We're hoping that the improved controls will allow devs to broaden their ideas somewhat. For one, first and third-person action games would suddenly be far more appealing than those squeezed onto the PSP using the rather limiting single analogue stick. During its peak the PS2 received game after game, with many of those being the best the generation had to offer. The same can't be said of the PSP, a platform that seems desperately in need of games, quality or otherwise. We've had some classics for sure (LocoRoco would stand up to the best on any platform), but for a Sony platform it just hasn't been good enough.

Graphics almost up to PS3 quality
You might laugh, but when the PSP 2 is released it'll be a high end bit of kit, pushing technology to its limit and probably your pocket too. When the PSP hit stores in Japan the PS2 had been on the market for four years, so if we assume that the PSP 2 will arrive late in 2010, some four years after the PS3 hit stores, the graphical capabilities of the machine should be quite comparable. We're talking sub PS3 in the same way the PSP is sub PS2, but still absolutely stunning for a handheld. If the PSP can run games like God of War: Chains of Olympus (which looks a hell of a lot better than a lot of early PS2 games), we reckon we could see games on par with the original PS3 Resistance in terms of visual quality.

I think the psp2 should have 3 seperate bits, 1 section is just the screen, very good high definition screen, with a few buttons on the bottom, side or top, this could be if you just want to watch a movie, or maybe music, so it looks like a nice media player. then the other two sections are d-pad/action buttons/analogues/shoulder buttons. with these two bits added on it becomes a gaming machine. and with extras to buy like a touchscreen for the bottom, or other extras.

The only thing it needs is decent games and better thumbsticks. The games for the PSP have been shockingly bad

I think a couple of your ideas conflict. How can you expect them to have dual analogue sticks, and a folding deisgn? Where do the sticks go?

oh lovely, this place doesn't support HTML.

On that note, pretty much the ONLY thing I'd ask for in the PSP2 is at least 128MB of RAM an better cache for - well, everything. I mean, I know for a fact that that's not too much to ask for and is very financially plausible at this point.
Backwards compatibility would be nice, too. Only problem with that is they'd have to stick with UMD, but I wouldn't be complaining any. I like UMD. Maybe they could create a new disc format with the same form factor as UMD, closer to BD capacity but also compatible with original discs.

There are a lot of things that could be improved on, and a lot of things that are unreasonable. This list is a lot more the latter than the former.

I only agree with like - 5 of these. You know, the ones they've already implemented. Most of these would come at the price of portability - which the PSP, the PlayStation Portable, is already struggling with on its own - and the others are financially improbable/impossible. They'd have to sell yet another of their major products at a loss, which frankly is a move they can't really make at this time. I know I wouldn't buy a PSP2 if it launched for more than $300, and would only think about it once it dropped to below $250.

Sure, all these would be nice, but you really have to realise what you're asking for. This... this is too much. Far too much.
They might as well just rip a PS3 controller apart and throw a screen between it if they were to go at all this. Then it'd be the size of a PSOne. No thanks.

As much as I would like to see all those features incorporated into the PSP 2, I know that it would probably raise the price of the PSP 2 to an amount that only the most Hardcore of Hardcore would pay. Kinda like what the PS3 went through would end up happening to the PSP 2, eventually Sony would have to lower the price and people would be slow to buy it.

I would probably like everything on this list but the PDA functions and since im in the US I wouldn't get the Live TV since we don't have a service like Sky TV but, if we did have something like Sky TV in the US I know I would use it on the PSP 2 and hopefully they would use my service provider AT&T U-verse service.

We are now in the know that power, graphics, bells and whistles are not everything. This has been provenby the success of the Wii and DS with both consoles out selling heir rivals by almost 2 to 1.
It just proves that all you need is a good product that hits it's target audience well. Grunt and power are not everything hence the PS3 and PSP sales compared to other consoles. Where as the PS2 was the weakest of the last generation consoles and just look at its sales and even current skills. Its that simple!
