Heads-up: What's new this week

A look ahead to Friday's new releases.

Welcome to Heads-up, our weekly feature which gives you an at-a-glance run-down on the games you'll be able to buy or rent this weekend. Every Tuesday we'll pick out the best of the bunch, link to our reviews and previews and keep you in the video game loop so you have enough time to pre-order for Friday's post. Time to splash the cash.

There really is something for everyone this week. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is the pick of the new releases, being an absolute must buy for anyone who's into first-person shooters. With a great single-player campaign and an utterly brilliant multiplayer mode, get this one ordered now. Also in the must-buy category is Assassin's Creed 2 on the PC, which comes complete with the DLC released so far for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. Finally there's Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. We can't wholly recommend the PSP and PS2 games, but the Wii version may well go down as a survival horror classic.

Worth a look

This lot might have appeared in the above list had we managed to get our hands on them, but we're playing safe until we've seen them for ourselves. Alice in Wonderland on the DS is getting a bit of buzz for being a good movie tie-in, whereas indie title Machinarium hits the PC in Collector's Edition form. Supreme Commander 2 looks to build on the success of the Gas Powered Games original, while Silent Hunter 5 is lurking beneath the surface, only visible to hardcore submarine fans. Fans of DS hit Picross will also be interested in follow-up, Picross 3D.
