8. The Wii's Christmas line-up

The big Christmas games from Sony and Microsoft were great this year. The PS3 had Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet and MotorStorm Pacific Rift, while the Xbox 360 had Fable II, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts and Gears of War 2. Nintendo gave Wii owners Wii Music, Disaster Day of Crisis and Animal Crossing: Let's go to the City. Even the most blinkered fanboy can't help but see the gaping chasm that is the difference in quality between those line-ups. Considering Nintendo fans had Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime: Corruption during the same period the year before, perhaps we'd been spoiled, but, after the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl in June, we can't help but feel as if Nintendo completely ignored the hardcore gamer for the rest of the year.
7. The great PSP game drought

Can you remember all the great PSP games released in 2008? You probably can actually, seeing they can be counted on one hand. God of War: Chains of Olympus was superb, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII was brilliant, LocoRoco 2 was an excellent follow-up to a great game and Patapon is probably worthy of a mention. But, after that, the list runs dry. What other quality games came out for Sony's handheld wonder in 2008? Sony released two Buzz! games (which we're not convinced are entirely suitable for the platform) and a number of services (on demand TV and movies, and a GPS system), but real quality games were in very short supply, not only from Sony but from third parties, too. We're hoping for better next year.

My second disappointment was the apparent 'wolf-pack' mentality of the games press in regards to Denis Dyack and Too Human, the upshot of which was I now look at reviews purely as subjective opinion pieces, so I find gamers' comments tacked onto the end of previews/reviews more valuable when researching my next purchase rather than Metacritic averages. Destructiod giving Too Human 2/10 says it all really, I got 200 hours out of that game.
Obviously my primary disappointment is not getting a date with Jade Raymond. She doesn't write, she doesn't call. Not having my phone number or address isn't an excuse.
Overall: 2008 was a blisteringly great year for gaming, I don't think I've ever had so much fun in a 12 month period and the sheer volume of delights totally outweighs my minor disappointments.

And it's just good to see one of these disappointment lists not contain PS Home, because it really isn't bad enough for that treatment.

Gamewise, it would be Haze (though it's still far more playable than some would have you believe) and the whole DLC issue. It doesn't bother me platform-wise, I have all 3, but it's just annoying to feel forced into buying one version just to get content that either doesn't turn out to be that good, isn't as 'exclusive' as first thought or just doesn't turn up at all.

However, #1 is dead on.
When I saw Cammy get on the Wiiboard and pretend to have fun, all credibility in the presentation went downhill.
Then when they tried to redeem themselves by saying Animal Crossing was a hardcore game, they feel deeper into the quicksand.
Sony and MS stole the show on software this year, but Nintendo I believe will rise again in 09 with The Conduit, Motionplus...
