With video game publishers focussing more and more on what's around the corner, rather than looking ahead to what's due a year from now, predicting the big games and moments of 2009 isn't easy. But that hasn't stopped us gazing into our gaming crystal ball and bringing you our predictions on what's going to happen next year. Here, we run down our top tips for all you Microsoft fanboys out there.
Full Xbox 360 game downloads

Microsoft has been leading the way with its console digital download service, currently offering gamers the Xbox LIVE Arcade service and Xbox Originals (a selection of games first released on the original Xbox), but in 2009 the company will take this one step further. Starting with big hitters Halo 3, Gears of War and Forza 2, full Xbox 360 games will be released on Xbox LIVE Marketplace. By the end of the year over 50 games will be available on the service at a sub £20 price point.

I'd be very surprised if Square don't manage to pull off a global release for FFXIII, they've had years to refine development so they can include localisation from day zero so, for the PS3 version at least, I'd expect a same day release worldwide. There's really no excuse these days for not doing so.
For the 360 version? I've no idea how late that came along in the development cycle compared to the PS3 version, I'd concur with 'sometime in 2010' though. Might be worth giving Square a call to find out :)
Top 3 XBox 360 Games for Xmas 2009:
3. 'Relatively experimental Squenix RPG bundled with FFXIII demo'
2. Need For Speed Underwhelming ButAtLeastWeGotItRightThisTime
1. FIFA X due to last-minute marketing drive
What's a Zune? :P
Finally, I'm betting Rockstar will go the full 12 months without upsetting a minority group on any platform. I like long odds.
Edit: I don't think full 360 version games as DLC will kick off, with each game at 7GB per disc you'd be lucky to be able to fit 15 of them onto a 120GB HDD when you take into account all the other gubbins people have on their HDDs. I think people will still prefer to buy the classic box+disc+manual then install to HDD as they require. If the Nextbox comes with a 1 TeraBybe optical drive (or whatever technology they'll be using for drives half a decade from now) then it'll be more workable.Last edited on Sat 27 December 2008 by FantasyMeister
