When you buy a PlayStation 3 you're not only getting what's out now, but what's coming further down the line. The games due this year look great, but in 2009 we could well see the games that show the real power of the PS3. Gran Turismo 5, God of War 3 and Final Fantasy XIII are huge blockbuster games, only coming to PS3 and potentially more impressive than any games we'll see on the Xbox 360 in the future.

1. Hardware quality

While none of us here at VideoGamer.com have suffered the dreaded Red Ring of Death on our Xbox 360s it's impossible to ignore. The Xbox 360 isn't nearly as reliable as it should be and this is something that the PlayStation 3 doesn't suffer from. Sure, people have reported broken PS3s but it's a small percentage. You're paying more for your PS3 but you're relatively safe in the knowledge that it won't break a few months down the line. What's more, you can hardly hear it when it's in use; something that can't be said for the Xbox 360. A Hard drive and wireless adapter can also be found in every PS3.

Nice article , the ps3 certainly has a lot going for it this year .... but competition will likely force another pricecut. I think with how well Sony reduced the manufacturing costs of the PS3 and how well the division has done recently could give them the room for another pricecut and they will take advantage of that.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the 40 gig at $349 when MGS4 hits and later down to $299 for the holiday push. (in the U.S.) That would be one magic number that they should be working towards.

Some of the reasons mentioned are more or less hypotheticals. Sure Home sounds cool, but Sony hasn't delivered a good online virtual world in a while and rarely does it ever have all the features they promise. Much of the software mentioned is cross-platform or not out yet and while some of those titles are heavy hitters, they don't have proven success on a next-gen platform yet and they may not be that great.

Ultimately though, with Blu-ray included, it doesn't need a price drop. It's still cheaper than most (all?) stand-alone Blu-ray players so if that's your cup of tea, the PS3 is the best way to go for it.

Great article. Nice points on the break down of the 360 pricing and how people going into that model are unwillingly forced to pay for what is standard on the PS3 and the wii - online multiplay and wireless networking to name 2. Add those into the 360 price and the price cut means nothing for the PS3.

PS3 has all the biggest games this year. I mean ALL THE BIGGEST GAMES are PS3 exclusive . KILLZONE 2 and RESISTANCE 2 already have over 2million in preorders in europe alone. In europe 60% of the x360s purchased have been traded in for PS3. PS3 has 2x the install base as x360 there. In USA too x360 is murdered by PS3 after HD DVD's demise. MGS4 sees the end of console war wordlwide . KZ2 and RESISTANCE 2 will shatter all sales records and cause mega flops at the US BOX OFFICE .

PS3 have mercy on your inferior and DEFECTIVE competitors

While I tend to agree with many of the points (although I don't think brand loyalty should be counted on too much), I'd rather see Sony cut the price one more time now (to $349 or $299) and nail the coffin for Microsoft for good.

The quicker this "war" ends, the better off Sony will be in the longer run. There really are too many similarities between this war and the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD war and... lol the DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION CONTEST~!! ^^

Just suck it up Sony. Take that $100-200million loss in console sale revenues NOW, and enjoy the throne for the next ten years in this giant industry. $200 million is nothing compared to the opportunity cost here.

Great article. I really think then this Sony's year. The Sony had a sucessfull past with PS and PS2. What I think that can be negative to growing of PS3 sells are the price, but thinking seriously, buy a video game and a blue-ray drive by this price became a good thing.

1st: Price cuts are always nice =)
2nd: TODAY, 360 is the best choice. PS3 == Promises
3rd: PS3 vs 360? Good Fight, we win.
-> M$ puts big $$$ into gaming = nice games
-> Sony and M$ learn from mistakes
-> PRICE CUTS
4th: Do you really belive the ps3 will unleash some magic power? I don't =)
5th: PS3 = big mistake
-> Slow blu-ray drive (longer loading times, I had a game cube because of loading times)
-> Less powerfull Graphics card?
-> ALMIGHTY CELL not in the right moment? (no one seems to use it well, bottle necks maybe?)

I wish the ps3 launched with graphics impossible on the 360. But they chose to put a blu-ray reader.

Well if a firm that uses its day 1 console day in day out with absolutely no problems, where is the problem. My own 360 has never packed up. Yet my mate has had 3 PS3 failures and a single 360 return. It's luck of the draw and there is no actual proof that the PS3 is more reliable than 360. Of my friends I know there are just as many people with failures on both formats. Especially the 40 gb FOXCONN PS3 which is supposed to be on a par if not worse reliability than that of the 360 speculation. Where is this documentation?

As quoted from Mr_Hawk it is all well and good having that all powerful cell but as you say there are problems. The reason there is problems is simply because the PS3 cell was designed by non gamers and did not consult the industry. As a programmer i can tell you that it is hard enought o code for a single cell let alone the complexity of a double or tripple cell. I can wholey understand why programers are slumping and are unable to unleash the potential. But another consideration is that if the power of the core is unleashed then it will simply be bottle knecked by the poor RAM inside the PS3.

Price Cut is not what it needs a total redesign is what is needed. I strongly feel that the last good Sony console was the PS1 and since the corporate machine has taken over and produced some finely tuned bags of crap.
