Welcome to VideoGamer.com Plays, our weekly feature where we give you the inside track on what's been whirring in our disc drives this week. We'll be honest (so if we've been playing Superman on the N64 we'll tell you). But if we've been hammering the latest billion-selling blockbuster we'll let you know about that too.
Tom Orry, Editor - MySims, Wii.
Over Christmas I didn't really play games, I watched them being played. A Wii was the top gift my little sister received this year and out of the handful of games (including Wii Sports) her favourite is without doubt MySims. This Nintendofied version of The Sims that reviewers were quick to criticise last year captivated her like the best family movies and children's TV shows. It's safe to say that EA made Christmas this year. She loves it so much that she instantly took a liking to EA's other panned effort EA Playground, simply because the logo at the beginning is the same.
Wesley Yin-Poole, Deputy Editor - Tabula Rasa, PC.
This Starship Troopers inspired MMO is growing on me. I'm working my way towards level 10 as a Specialist (a kind of damage over time/healer hybrid) and despite the game being very similar to many other MMOs out there, it has a degree of charm that's tugging at my heartstrings. One moment in particular sealed the deal - I met an NPC who dished out quests in rhyme. It felt very forced, and not particularly poetic, but it made me smile anyway. Ah well. Shame he wants me to kill 20 bad guys and bring him some sample, like everyone else in every MMO ever.
James Orry, News Editor - World of Warcraft, PC
Despite beginning my WoW journey well before Christmas my Tauren Shaman, Hornstar, is still struggling to level up. I'm around mid-level 14 and I go through periods of XP bursts, joined by huge periods of wandering around looking for a certain person/item said to be found in some vague location. Spending my evenings running around desperately hoping to stumble upon a cave opening is not my idea of fun and quite frankly I've had enough. I've taken matters into my own hands though and installed a series of mods designed to bring the wonders of GPS to WoW. Here's hoping it does the trick or I'll probably end up punching my virtual character with my very real fist.
Nick Peres, Video Producer - Beneath a Steel Sky, PC
This week I have been playing an old classic from revolution software, the guys that brought us some real legendary adventure titles including the broken sword series. Again delving back over some fond memories, BASS still has a wonderful dark and gritty feel to it. Set in a bleak future, the story is a compelling one for all science fiction fans and promises at least a whole afternoon's worth of play. Hats off again to the scummvm team for having the game available as a free download. Go and grab this great point and click gem.
Simon Hunter, Associate Video Producer - Dead or Alive 4, Xbox 360
Having been spoilt lately for thought provoking, landmark games with a rich story (mass effect, orange box), I really wanted to just shut off my brain and mash some buttons. So this week I decided to pickup Dead or Alive 4, and it didn't disappoint! Here's an example of how skill-less this game is - one particular opponent was vexing me for about half an hour, no matter how sloppily and randomly I mashed the joypad. In walked Adam who was curious as to why agonised yells were coming from my office. He picked up the pad, didn't bother asking the controls and nailed it in one! After that stunt I decided to show Adam how to play DOA in real life...
