AVP2: Requiem - Blu-ray

Oh boy. If you thought the first Alien vs. Predator movie was stupid you're in for a real treat with the sequel. A Predator scout ship crashes on earth, unfortunately releasing Alien face huggers and creating an Alien/Predator hybrid - the Predalien. A Predator gets word of the crash and comes to Earth to investigate - queue a battle between the Predator, the Aliens and ridiculous Predalien, which all takes place in a small town in the Colorado hills. It's stupid and predictable but horror/gore fans are likely to get some enjoyment from it - albeit without any of the genuine scares found in the far superior Alien series.
The Blu-ray is also the way to go for the best viewing experience, offering an excellent audio and video presentation. There's also plenty of extra content if you're desperate to see how the film was made.

30 Days of Night - Blu-ray

I had very high hopes for this Josh Hartnett vampire flick, hopes that raised considerably after an impressive opening. Sadly things quickly spiralled out of control into usual horror territory. It's full of gore, a bad script, wooden acting and is largely predictable, which depending on your view point could be good or bad things. What 30 Days of Night certainly doesn't do is offer any real scares, having played all its cards very early on by flaunting the vampire horde. Subtle it is not. Still, there's a satisfying ending and horror fans could do worse.
My qualms with the movie certainly don't take away from what is an excellent Blu-ray disc. The 1080p video is highly de-saturated and comes to life with some rather large crimson splatters - particularly impressive in an overhead scene in which the vampires savage the isolated town's helpless citizens. The disc also boasts some impressive extras, notably a 51-minute making of documentary.

Enchanted - Blu-ray

Tough guys might shy away from Disney's Enchanted, but give it a chance and you'll find a loveable modern fairytale with all the charm of a Disney animated classic. It's the story of a fairytale princess, Giselle, who is cast into the real world. Fearful for the life of his love, Prince Edward arrives in the real world to save her and return them both to the fairytale world. Giselle soon realises that the prince, whom she had believed to be her soul mate, is not her true love. I'm not embarrassed to say that Enchanted is a feel good movie everyone should check out.
Even better then that the Blu-ray edition sports stunning visuals and a knockout audio presentation that does full justice to the often brilliant soundtrack - the movie features three Academy Awards nominated songs. Sadly the disc is a little bare in regards to extras so we fully expect a fully-fledged special edition to appear at some point down the line.

The Golden Compass - Blu-ray

Based on the hugely popular fantasy novel by Philip Pullman, The Golden Compass was pegged to do huge business at cinemas, but sadly for New Line this didn't materialise. Despite its apparent family appeal the movie has so viciously chopped up the novel that those coming into the story without any previous knowledge could well find themselves lost as the story hops about with little care for the viewer's understanding. It's certainly an impressive production and kids will likely enjoy it, but for what was hoped to be the start of a new fantasy motion picture series it's sadly lacking.
The Blu-ray edition certainly doesn't disappoint, boasting a highly impressive 1080p video and aggressive audio, plus a strong selection of extra content spread out over the two-disc set. It's a strong set that fans should certainly pick up.
