Since the Nintendo DS launched in November 2004 the handheld has sold more than 21 million units worldwide.
The numbers include the original and the newly released DS Lite, which features a sleeker design and improved screens. According to Nintendo, the 21 million DS units sold equates to 23 systems sold per minute.
"We're thrilled to be announcing this milestone today," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications, "especially since Nintendo DS was North America's top-selling video game system of any type in June."
AdvertisementNintendo cites the broad appeal of the Nintendo DS as a key factor in the handheld's success. This is no more apparent than with Nintendo's Touch Generations line up of titles, such as Brain Training and Nintendogs, which are accessible for all ages and skill sets.
The Nintendo DS also looks to have a strong line-up of titles on the way, with Star Fox Command, Yoshi's Island 2, and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team all looking likely hits. The Nintendo DS Browser also makes its way to Europe on October 6, turning the DS into a handheld web browsing device.
Nintendo looks to be taking the same approach with the Wii - focusing heavily on appealing to a broad range of people, whilst offering new innovative ideas not found on the rival platforms.

That is pretty damn good, my 5yr old daughter has a DS and I own a DS Lite, I also bought my niece a DS last yr, they are a near brilliant ! I am looking forward to Star Fox on it,
