Speaking in a conference call to investors, Midway boss David Zucker has confirmed that a new title in the Mortal Kombat franchise is to be released this year.

"...our focus really is not so much on the number of games as it is on creating games that are going to breakthrough and doing a better job of that historically," said Zucker. "Games like This Is Vegas and of course you got Mortal Kombat game this year and others that we think have potential to give us higher unit numbers."

MCV notes that very little info is known. Ed Boon, creator of the Mortal Kombat series, has previously confirmed the eighth game is being built using the Unreal Engine 3 technology, suggesting a release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms.

We're hoping to hear much more on the game at Midway's showcase event next month.

What can we expect from this new re-built MK? I'll tell you since i've been awaiting the new arrival since......well, awhile

1) Ed Boon has confirmed the game is going to be serious and will have no comedy relief what-so-ever. Bye Bye Johnny Cage and Bo rai cho? I hope so

2) There is alot of new characters going to be introduced and only a handful of old ones will be coming back (Everyone else is killed or missing from Armageddon). I've heard a rumour that Midway have been asking what characters the fans want back, can someone confirm or deny this?

3) The game is going to be nothing like Deadly Alliance, Deception or Armageddon. It's going to be rebuilt, a new fighting system and so more violent than the others (This is a good thing to me since i can tolerate the mindless violence in Mortal Kombat)

4) Scorpion, i hate him, Ed Boon loves him......
