If you have the means, I would strongly recommend it. Yes, yes, I KNOW. It's POKEMON! With that comes certain expectations. However, if you ever look beyond the cartoonish looks and into the mechanics behind it, you may well find yourself in for an exceptionally rewarding time.
Play it as a single-player RPG, and it lacks. It's fairly standard storywise, and suffers from a bad case of "Just go up a couple of levels" to win every in-game battle. But if you step outside that just once, and actually partake in a battle against another human, the sheer amount of strategies and options open to you is borderline terrifying. I still connect with my 17 year old son online, and it is still as much fun as it was back when he was 5.
