Final Fantasy, really, is all about the characters. The characters drive the story forward. It is the characters who you fall in love with, who you care about, who you emotionally engage with. It is the characters, their design, personalities, and, of course, kick ass special attacks, that make Final Fantasy so beloved. To mark the release of the latest in the franchise, Final Fantasy XIII - read our verdict here - we thought we'd cast our mind back and recount our favourite characters from Square Enix's fantasy universe. Some are easy to predict. Some... less so. And yes, even some FFXIII characters make the cut.

Tifa Lockhart - Final Fantasy VII

Let's talk about love triangles. Cloud clearly fancied Aeris, but she was more interested in Sephiroth, or was that Zak? Anyway, she died, so that left Tifa, owner of the 7th Heaven bar and member of terrorist group AVALANCHE. She quite obviously fancied Cloud but wasn't really doing it for him. Got that? Good. Tifa's no-nonsense approach and brutal punches endeared her to those who found Aeris too sickly sweet to swallow. She didn't suffer any of Cloud's emo crap, and wasn't afraid to tell him to get over himself when he was sulking. She was as sexy as she was confident, too. She had nice legs and big breasts. What more could we ask for?

Cid - various

There's a Cid in almost every Final Fantasy game. From VII's chain-smoking Cid Highway to XII's wonderfully-named Doctor Cidolfus Demen Bunansa, Cid's usually an airship pilot, or a mechanic, or a tinkerer of some description. But in recent times he's expanded his skill set, and even taken an interest in the more villainous side of Final Fantasy character life. The aforementioned Doctor Cid was a bad guy - the first Cid villain in a Final Fantasy game. And, without wanting to spoil anything for you new Final Fantasy XIII owners out there, that game's Cid is a... how shall we put it... interesting fellow, too. Now, the question we want answered is: why? Why have a Cid as a recurring character name in the Final Fantasy series? What is it about the name Cid, that Square Enix loves so much? Answers on a postcard please.

I respect what people choose and sees on their own opinion about these things... But you CLAIMINGLY say that it's our favorite characters in FF? Hell no!

What a BOLD CLAIM! You claiming that "Our favourite characters from Square Enix's fantasy universe." are the ones you picked? You don't even show any vote system or people who liked these people the most. Your top 7 isn't even much popular comparing to squall or even Vivi.

It's quite obvious that you are too much of a "fan boy" to other series of FF that you over look the other characters from the Final Fantasy series. The heck, even one of your so called "Top 10 Final Fantasy Characters" doesn't include Vivi in it.

Vivi is understandable and can be one of the top ten characters in Final Fantasy history for it's popularity on the net, the same time of how many liked Vivi so much. Yet you include some of the least likable characters, who do not even deserve to be on the Top 10.

Your not the type who could judge and gives opinion on these.

I absolutely hate when these are badly written, and OBVIOUSLY favor one final fantasy, showing how BIAS it is.

How about the fact that most die-hard fans of FF state 4 as their favorite, and in every poll over recent years, Squall is a more favored hero over Cloud. And I know this was made in '10. When I say recent years, I mean since around '07-ish.

This list isn't even worth adding mine to. Mine would actually be diverse, and accurate, rather than seeming like it was made by a VII fanboy.

10: Wakka
9: Cloud
8: Sephiroth
7: Fang
6: Kain
5: Lightning
4: Celes
3: Tidus
2: Auron
1: Sazh
Yeah, Cloud is just an emo kid with a sword, but he was the first to make it look cool. That still isn't enough to get him to the top 3.

I have a serious problem with your depiction Cloud was emo and Tifa was the one that stood up to him about?

Tifa: Don't you remember our promise?
Cloud: What does this have to do with my pay?
Aerith: why are these people chasing me?
Cloud: For a SOLDIER candidate, you're pretty slow.

Tifa: ...
Aerith: ...
Cloud: Hey, why is everyone so down?

Tifa: I bet Aerith would be much more up front...
Aerith: I wanna meet the real you
Cloud: I'm right here?

Confrontation with Sephiroth:
Cloud: Hey Tifa? Why are you so worried, it's all smokes and mirrors don't you know. Nothing to worry about.

Cloud was WAAAY more secure then Tifa.

Tifa and Rikku have been two of my favourites along with Cloud. I actually quite liked Squall as well.

Lulu was brilliant, it's a shame Paine from FFX-2 wasn't in the original, she was pretty excellent too.

And for the record Aeris was useless gameplay-wise. Tifa and Cid all the way. Actually Yuffie was a fairly cool character too...they sure know their stuff. So many good memories associated with FF games and characters.

Jamin@ wyp100

Sazh is awesome. Quite unlike anything the FF universe has thrown up before. He's subtle, and a fantastic contrast to the confident, over-the-top badass that is Lightning. He represents the player; a normal guy caught up in an ridiculous fantasy. And he's funny, in a pathetic kind of way.

Maybe Snow will grow on me, but right now (16 odd hours in), he's a boring stereotype. But I'll trust you and give him some more time.

Sazh? Really? God he annoyed me.

Auron could have made it. He was great.

And Snow? Easily my fav from FFXIII. Might be a controversial choice, but he grew on me.
