Soon we will be treated to the official reveal of the new Call of Duty installment coming out this year. Nothing has been officially confirmed as of yet, but reports indicate it is called Black Ops Gulf War and it is launching in the fall. While most leaks and rumors have whetted the appetites of fans, many are disappointed by reports that Call of Duty 2024 will support last-gen consoles PS4 and Xbox One.
Reports indicate that the Call of Duty 2024 reveal could happen before Microsoft’s Xbox summer showcase in June. As for details about the game, it will reportedly bring Verdansk back to Warzone, and it will remaster a classic Black Ops map. Not only that, but everything reported about zombies suggests a return to the series’ heyday with Black Ops 3 elements returning.
In addition, leaks about the campaign sound incredibly ambitious, and over 100 guns, perks, and killstreaks have been shared online. While all of this sounds incredible, many fans are dismayed by reports indicating that CoD will continue to support PS4 and Xbox One consoles with Black Ops Gulf War.
Call of Duty Black Ops Gulf War to release on PS4 and Xbox One
Although not confirmed, rumors suggest that Call of Duty will continue to release on PS4 and Xbox One last-gen consoles with Black Ops Gulf War. This has recently been shared on Twitter by Zuby_Tech.
The tweet by Zuby_Tech especially highlights how long Call of Duty has continued to support last-gen. Since the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, Activision has supported PS4 and Xbox for over five years, which is longer than they did for PS3 and Xbox One which only last three years.
Although many PlayStation and Xbox console exclusives for Sony and Microsoft have ditched last-gen consoles such as Helldivers 2 and Starfield, there are still many third-party games that support both last and current-gen. These are typically annual releases such as sports and multiplayer games.
Again, it’s not official that Call of Duty Black Ops Gulf War will be supporting last-gen, but it wouldn’t be surprising as PS4 and Xbox One still have massive playerbases, and selling on all systems would equal more money for Activision. But, even though it’s logical for Activision, it’s disappointing for current-gen players who have been well ready for last-gen to get dropped.
In the replies to Zuby_Tech, one user commented that Activision ‘having to work with 2 entirely different generations of consoles causes multiple cuts in quality/content’. Another user commented game design suffers from accounting for the lowest common denominator, meanwhile, another commented that last-gen support ‘drags down performance development on new gen’.
Asking whether Call of Duty 2024 will be released on last-gen consoles over on Reddit, many users have echoed the same frustrations. One of the top replies said ‘In a perfect world, it won’t be on PS4 in ANY capacity’ echoed by comments such as ‘We gotta let last gen go fr’.
We should get confirmation of all the platforms Black Ops Gulf War will launch on during the Xbox summer showcase planned for June 9th/10th.
