Helldivers 2 is the best multiplayer game of the year so far. As a PvE co-op shooter, it’s an absolute blast playing with friends gunning down waves of aliens. The maximum you can have for your squad is a team of four, but the Arrowhead community manager has discussed the possibility of adding squads bigger than four to Helldivers 2 in the future.

Arrowhead’s Helldivers 2 has taken over the world for PlayStation and PC gamers. There is a new rumor suggesting Sony are early in talks to bring HD2 to Xbox, but right now it is restricted to PS5 and PC. Console and PC are able to team up through crossplay, and for the future the dev has given an exciting update on possibly adding melee weapons.

While the addition of adding melee weapons seems likely, the prospect of squads bigger than four seems unlikely for the time being. It’s not completely dismissed, but right now it’s not on the table.

Will Helldivers 2 get squads bigger than four players?

On Discord, the Arrowhead community manager for Helldivers 2, Twinbeard, has responded to a fan’s query about whether the game will add squads larger than four. Right now four is the maximum players allowed for a co-op party of gunning down hordes of aliens.

In response, Twinbeard posted ‘The short answer is that I don’t know’. He further elaborated by saying ‘I do know that if we ever go down that route, it would require a lot of work. If it’s ever a thing (which I’m not at all sure it will be), it’s in the distant future’.

It’s a brief response, but it’s basically saying that squads bigger than four is currently not in the works and there’s a really slim chance it will ever happen. The chances of it ever happening are not completely null, but the odds are miniscule at best.

As stated by the Arrowhead community manager, it would require a lot of work, and this is probably because the game is currently perfect for teams of four. You can play solo or in a party consisting of two or three helldivers, but the perfect balance is four players so a lot of reworking would need to be done to accommodate squads possibly as large as five or six.

While squads bigger than four isn’t happening at the very least for the near future, the community manager has revealed that Arrowhead is working on an upcoming nerf that will stop players ‘dying in 2 secs’. In addition, the most recent 01.000.203 update patch notes reveal a list of known issues that are getting fixed.
