Nintendo has apologised for "disappointing many people by failing to include same-sex relationships" in upcoming Nintendo 3DS title Tomodachi Life, and pledged to "better represent all players" should it build a second game in the series.

In a statement posted on the company's website this evening, Nintendo said that it was "committed to fun and entertainment for everyone".

"We apologize for disappointing many people by failing to include same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life. Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to change this game's design, and such a significant development change can’t be accomplished with a post-ship patch.

"At Nintendo, dedication has always meant going beyond the games to promote a sense of community, and to share a spirit of fun and joy. We are committed to advancing our longtime company values of fun and entertainment for everyone. We pledge that if we create a next installment in the Tomodachi series, we will strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players."

In response to a social media campaign calling for same-sex relationships to be included in the game, Nintendo issued a statement earlier this week explaining that "the relationship options in [Tomodachi Life] represent a playful alternate world rather than a real-life simulation," and said that it "never intended to make any form of social commentary with the launch of Tomodachi Life".

Tomodachi Life launches in the UK on June 6.

The bug still sounded hilarious and in keeping with the 'feel' of Tomodachi as I've seen it described anyway, the bigger issue is that the bug also led to save game corruption apparently. This is a much better response from Nintendo and given how badly mangled both theinital NoA response and the Japanese patch notes were I'm hanging all of this on NoJ. You created NoA because you needed a local presence with local sensibilities guys, use them!.

To be fair they patched out a glitch that only worked randomly and whilst did allow same sex marriage, it meant that one of the male characters had male pregnancy and become female in the games programming. It's not like they just patched out an option in a menu of the game.

Seems somewhat disingenuous, knowing the ability to engage in a same-sex relationship was patched out of the original game. :|

No, it's sympathy for them because they are known to be a very family friendly company, and usually don't piss off their fans (or at least do that less then other companies).

I like how people are like "They didn't mean it :( They are all up for it really..." If this was anyone else then everyone would say this: "It's too late you *****ing ***** *****s. My hopes and dreams have been ruined beyond repair." Is it sympathy for them since their console is selling like crap?

I would bet 10 to 1 that no sequel will be made and if one does get made, it will not be released outside of Japan. :D

I'm just sorry this wasn't their initial response, as this is a much better response. Some damage has been done, however, but I hope they manage to come out with a sequel that would include it. In the mean time - thank you Nintendo for a respectful response.

There you go, that's a much better response. Whilst the not including same sex marriage was unfortunate, the worst part of this situation was the fact that Nintendo was trying to justify a reason for not including rather then simply initially apologising. Also, the fact that there was a bug in the Japanese version of the game aloud you to have same sex marriage and babies didn't help their case either.

This is better, an apology and a promise to include said feature in a new instalment if a sequel were made.

I dont think people would have bothered that if this wasnt in the original release in Japan then removed claming it was a bug

Sounds to me like they are appologising for failing to include it, and the disappointment that caused. Which is pretty reasonable. They could have pulled out the old "sorry you were offended" chestnut.

I love the fact that they apologized for disappointing people rather than the fact that they didn't include it.

A much better response. It's fine to overlook something, and it's fine that it's too late to change it. It's not fine to try and justify on the basis that LGBT people are antithetical to making a fun, whimsical game.
