Simon Miller, Editor-In-Chief - Mario Golf: World Tour, 3DS

mariogolf -

Mario gets inserted into everything, and if that triggered any dirty thoughts in your head you should be ashamed of yourself. What would your mother think! It's a fact, though, with the Italian one finding himself karting, 'footballing', 'Olympicing', and, of course, golfing.

The genre - which was invented by Tiger Woods in the nineties and then popularised thanks to EA - hasn't evolved in years, but given that no one (including me) has any new ideas means it's hard to criticise it. It's not Mario Golf's job to do that either, and what has been presented here is actually pretty damn good.

As you've probably gathered it's not going to change the face of the video game universe, but if you're looking for a very easy-going yet addictive golf game then this ticks those boxes. I'd go as far to say that if you liked the last one in the series, you'll like this one too. And no one has ever used that phrase. Ever.

Brett Phipps, Staff Writer - Civ V, PC

Civilization V screenshot

Since getting my first gaming PC, Civ V has been eating away at most of my free time. I’ve always loved the series, but have never been able to finish matches thanks to only playing in brief spells at friend’s houses.

What I like is how quickly things can go so wrong. Dido requested we go to war with Alexander of Greece, I (stupidly) accepted, providing I was given 10 turns prep. My military advisor then informs me that Greece has the superior army - cue a quick chat with Alex to form a dynamic duo against Dido.

Isabella of Spain decides to stick her nose in, and I’ve been wanting to take Spain out ever since she sent a spy to steal my compass. A public denouncement from the second largest empire wasn’t what I needed moments after entering the fray. I’ve decided to delay war with Spain for now, but once Dido is out of the picture, Isabella’s next.

Tom Orry, Editorial Director - Trials Fusion, PS4

This game has finally ended the life of my left analogue stick on my DualShock 4. Despite only using it for at most an hour a day (probably only 5 hours or so a week) since launch, the rubber has now completely gone. Clearly the chosen material simply isn't good enough, even though the sticks get a proper workout with Trials Fusion.

Incidentally, I've now unlocked the Extreme levels, and they're damn hard. Trying to platinum the older levels is also proving to be a recipe in frustration, but I'm a long way from giving up.

Steve Burns, Reviews and Features Editor - Watch Dogs, PS4

This week I've been writing about my time with Watch Dogs, a game I thought was interesting but needed a lot of work. With just over a month until release it's difficult to see how it can change that much, but hopefully Ubisoft can pull something out of the fire.

Also on my playlist has been Contagion, a PC title in early access that plays a bit like ZombiU meets Left 4 Dead. It's a bit pricey at 15 quid, but fans of either of those game should check it out.

Oh, and I also brought Ronaldo back to Old Trafford on FIFA, in case anyone still cares. You don't. Fair enough.

David Scammell, Deputy News Editor - Holiday, His House

We don't know what Dave is doing on the day we put VGPlays together. Because he's on holiday. So let's pretend he's playing Ryse.

Why not...

New stuff to check out

I don't think Steve should review it, seems a bit set on that it's a bit of a let down and it doesn't seem like anything the game can do will change his mind. Have some review it who hasn't played it at press events etc.

I'm gonna take a guess and say that Steve will give Watchdogs a seven out of ten
